About Route Zero

Hi, I'm Patrick George. Thanks for visiting.

I created this newsletter to collect and analyze the week’s most important stories about the zero-emission transformation of the car industry. It’s free to subscribe, and I hope you do.

My goal with Route Zero is to give analysis and context about what’s next in cars for anyone, whether you’re a seasoned auto industry insider or a newcomer trying to understand what’s going on.

About me

I’m originally from Texas, but these days I live in upstate New York.

I spent the first part of my career as a Metro Desk reporter for the Austin American-Statesman before deciding to chase a lifelong passion for cars by joining the staff of Jalopnik in 2012. I was named Editor-in-Chief in 2015 and I held that post for nearly five years. Afterward, I served as Editorial Director over Recurrent Ventures’ automotive and military publications, including The Drive and Task & Purpose.

I currently serve as the Editor-in-Chief of InsideEVs, a leading digital publication that covers the EV race and the future of transportation.

I am a regular contributor to The Atlantic, and my work has appeared in other fine outlets like The Verge, Heatmap, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Road & Track and more.

I’ve spent the past few years covering the high-tech transformation of the auto industry because I believe it’s one of the most important (and under-reported)stories of our time. The global car industry is a $3 trillion one that employs, directly or indirectly, millions of people.

Whether it’s driven by regulations, market forces or simply the march of technology, that industry’s pivot to run on battery power—and eventually autonomous driving—stands to transform how we live, work and get around in countless ways. And it will have a profound impact on our planet amid the climate crisis.

All of this is to say: it’s not a field where you get slow news days. But that’s why I like it.
